The Stadio Olimpico in Rome is one of the two main sporting venues in Italy, the other being the San Siro stadium in Milan. It is located in the northern part of Rome within the 'Foro Italico' sports complex. It is mainly used for football matches and is currently the home stadium of both Lazio and Roma Serie A football teams. The final of the 'Coppa Italia' tournament is always held there and it was the venue for the 1990 World Cup final and four European Cup finals, including the 1996 and 2009 Champions League finals. It doubles as the national athletics stadium and is used by the Italian national rugby team as well as hosting music concerts and other events of various kinds.

Stadio dei Cipressi - 1941

Work started on the original stadium in 1927 as part of the 'Foro Mussolini' as it was then known. It was originally called the 'Stadio dei Cipressi'. At the outbreak of war, the project was shelved until 1950 when work was restarted.

Stadio dei Centomila

The stadium was renamed the 'Stadio dei Centomila', anticipating that it would hold 100,000 spectators, and the sports complex renamed as 'Foro Italico'. The building was inaugurated on 17 May 1953 with a football game between Italy and Hungary. The stadium went on to host the summer olympics in 1960. In the event, the stadium only managed to hold 65,000 spectators.

The next major development was started in 1987 in preparation for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. The stadium was extensively modernised and enlarged to a capacity of just under 83,000 people.

In 2007, the stadium was again restyled to conform to UEFA standards in preparation of hosting the 2009 Champions League final. These changes saw the capacity drop to just over 73,000 spectators.
