Garfagnana - A Natural Paradise

Garfagnana is one of the lessor known parts of Tuscany, a land rich in history and natural beauty with many beautiful views across rivers, lakes, valleys, hills and mountains. It is very mountainous, positioned between the Apuan Alps and the Apennines, which is an area many consider as one of the most beautiful parts of Tuscany. It is totally unspoilt, providing a rare paradise for wildlife and nature lovers alike. It is the perfect environment for visitors to enjoy mountain biking, horse riding and trekking, all the time surrounded by the most spectacular scenery.

All visitors to the area can explore the many picturesque towns and villages where time seems to stand still and where the ancient customs and traditions of the countryside still survive today. In the summer there are many colourful festivals where visitors can join in and enjoy local traditions as they are celebrated with a wonderful array of delicious, natural, local products.

Garfagnana contains the largest of the Italian National Parks, which stretches over 50 square kilometres. The highest point is Mount Prado, at 2,054 metres. The woodland in this region is highly prized, and contains over 10,000 hectares of oak, chestnut, spruce, maple and beech.
Garfagnana is within easy reach of many well-known towns such as Castelnuovo, Garfagnana's capital, Lucca, the birthplace of Pucini and Bagni di Lucca which are all well served with road, and rail links. There are airports at Pisa and Florence, which is itself only a couple of hours drive away.

With its history, its ancient customs and traditions, its delicious gastronomic treats and, above all its uncompromised natural beauty, Garfagnana is a dream destination waiting to be discovered.
