Puccini Festival - Torre del Lago

The Puccini Festival is held annually, during July and August, to celebrate the life and works of the famous Italian composer Giacomo Puccini.
Shortly before going away to Brussels to have treatment for throat cancer Giacomo Puccini was walking by Lake Massaciuccoli near his home in Torre del Lago with his friend Giovacchino Forzano. Puccini made a chance remark saying how much he would like to hear his music performed in the open air. Giovacchino took this to mean that the composer was expressing a wish to have his operas performed, after his death, by the side of the lake which formed an unusual natural stage. Puccini did not recover from throat cancer and died in Brussels, after which Giovacchino got to work in order to fulfill his friend's wishes.
The first Puccini Festival took place in 1930 and has since grown popularity. The performances now take place in the new outdoor theatre with seating for 3,370 people and is one of the worlds major operatic events.
