Brisbane Roar – Massimo Maccarone
When the 2016/17 campaign came to an end in the A-League Brisbane Roar found themselves in third place, a very respectable position. They had in fact repeated the same feat from the season before, and many of their fans had high hopes that the 2017/18 campaign would see them take another step forward; possibly finishing as runners up, or even winners. To progress they would need to strengthen, so they brought in 9 players, one being the then 37 year old striker Massimo Maccarone.

Now you could be forgiven for questioning bringing a player in who’s verging on the last season or two of his career, but Alessandro Del Piero is a prime example of an elder statesman of the game heading Down Under and impressing; he hit 24 goals in 48 games at Sydney FC at a similar age to Maccarone. Brisbane Roar’s frontman may not have the pedigree of Del Piero, but he has played for the likes of Empoli, Middlesbrough, Palermo and even the Italian national tea.

Since arriving in Brisbane, Maccarone has managed to bag 4 goals and an assist in 9 games which shows he’s still got a lot to offer; especially with The Roar currently languishing in 8th place in the A-League. Maccarone’s goals so far make up a third of the 12 goals scored by the team as a whole, but with only 2 wins from 9; they will need to improve dramatically it if they’re to equal last season’s third place finish, never mind better it.

It certainly seems a really tough ask for Brisbane Roar to rise to the fore. It’s not impossible though and with Maccarone contributing well in terms of goals, anything could happen. The Italian is currently joint 4th on the top scorers list and is priced at 14/1 with betting giant Unibet to end the campaign as the A-Leagues most prolific goal scorer. He’s only 3 goals behind leading marksmen Roy O’Donovan and Andrija Kaludjerovic and if The Roar kick on, he’s certainly going to be amongst the goals.

Brisbane Roar haven’t lifted the title since the 2013/14 season, and they’re going to need to get back on track quickly if they’re going to get anywhere close to the top of the table this campaign. Unibet currently have them at 20/1 to lift the A-League title, while they’re 9/1 to finish either first or second. So the odds are really stacked against them but all hope is far from lost.

They started the season with 3 successive defeats which really took their toll but since then they have only lost once, to league leaders Sydney FC; meaning they have only been beaten once in their last 6 outings. They have two wins from their last 3 games and are finally looking like they have turned the tide, and are ready to move up the table. One thing is for certain, with Maccarone leading the line, they will always be able to score goals and that could be pivotal this season.
